Hyundai Files Patents for Wheels Spun by Hub-Mounted Electric Motors
Two patents recently filed by Hyundai indicate the automaker is continuing work on developing in-wheel hub motors, according to Green Car Reports.
The automaker has previously tested concepts similar to in-wheel motors, such as the e-Corner modular steering and propulsion system, and the Universal Drive System it developed with Kia last year.
On Feb. 13, 2022, Hyundai’s affiliated technology supplier, Hyundai Mobis, first filed a patent for an “in-wheel working device,” which the United States Patent and Trademark Office published on Oct. 29, 2024.
Another patent from Hyundai, published by USPTO on Nov. 14, 2024, was first submitted earlier this year, and is for a drive mechanism enabling a hub-mounted electric motor to power the wheels. This setup would include a wheel bearing, outer race, and a speed reducer that integrates a ring gear couple with the bearing.
Though the filing of patents does not necessarily indicate plans to implement the technology, it is a sign that Hyundai is continuing research into the concept for potential future use.
