Mercedes-Benz USA, Department of Labor Partner to Train Job Corps Students in Automotive
Feb. 10, 2023–Mercedes-Benz USA has partnered with the U.S. Department of Labor to train Job Corps students in Kentucky, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Utah, according to a press release.
A curriculum will be developed by Mercedes-Benz and taught by instructors with the Job Corps. Mercedes-Benz will provide “technical support” and will “donate materials, tools and equipment needed to educate the students.”
The program is intended to bring in a new crowd of technicians that can handle the surge of EVs that shops will most likely begin to see over the next several years.
“This initiative will equip students with the skills they need for good jobs today and careers in the emerging energy economies of tomorrow,” U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh said.
Students will have opportunities such as studying and training with high-voltage vehicles at four Job Corps locations in the country: “Earle C. Clements Job Corps in Morganfield, Kentucky; Westover Job Corps in Chicopee, Massachusetts; Edison Job Corps in Edison, New Jersey; and Clearfield Job Corps in Clearfield, Utah.”
Job Corps National Director Rachel Torres believes the program is “an ideal entry point for students who want to become professionals in the automotive industry, especially aspiring electric vehicle mechanics.”
