March 1, 2021—Two auto shops located in Sussex County, Del., paid thousands of dollars in penalties to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) after allegedly selling and installing illegal "defeat devices" in heavy-duty diesel engines, the Delaware News Journal reported.
Designed to bypass, defeat or render inoperative an engine’s air pollution control equipment, defeat devices are a violation of the Clean Air Act.
Milton's Delaware Speed and Custom LLC paid $12,529 in penalties, while Seaford's Bo Daddy's Diesel and Auto Repair paid $6,000 in penalties.
