Sept. 19, 2013—Tesla Motors expects to have a self-driving car in its lineup in three years, according to a report from Reuters. The timeline is much more ambitious than other carmakers, such as Nissan and Mercedes-Benz, that have recently set 2020 as a target date for their own autonomous vehicles.
In the Reuters report, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company’s autonomous car would take over 90 percent of the driver’s tasks and the technology will be developed with Tesla’s own resources.
News broke after Tesla recently posted a job listing for the project.
Still, as Reuters points out, there are a variety of safety and legal issues surrounding autonomous cars that all manufacturers will have to face before being allowed on the road. Until the technology is proven, the future of self-driving vehicles is still very much up in the air.
