Nio and CATL Partner to Develop Standardized Battery Swapping in Electric Vehicles
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio is teaming up with one of the largest battery manufacturers, CATL, to work on establishing a standard for battery swapping in EVs, reports Inside EVs.
CATL’s “Choco-swap” concept involves developing an infrastructure for battery swapping that could be implemented across any platform within subcompact to midsized cars, including those with either lithium-iron-phosphate or nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries of various sizes.
As part of the partnership, CATL will be supporting Nio in developing a network of battery swap stations, and CATL’s Choco-swap standards will be used for Nio’s premium small EV sub-brand, Firefly.
As part of a plan titled “Chargeable, Swappable, Upgradeable,” Nio and CATL intent to create a standard for battery swapping, and nationwide infrastructure to support it. This involves not just building swap stations, but putting in place the battery management, recycling, and upgrading measures needed for logistics.
