Mercedes-Benz Road Testing Solid-State Battery Electric Vehicle Model
Inside EVs reports that Mercedes-Benz is now road testing a vehicle model equipped with a solid-state battery, produced in part with Factorial Energy.
A step towards the integration of all-solid-state batteries produced by Factorial, Mercedes’ prototype EQS vehicle contains a solid-state battery pack providing 25% more range, while having the same size and weight of lithium-ion packs.
In addition, the prototype’s battery has a lithium-metal anode, enabling more energy to be stored than traditional graphite anodes without sacrificing any extra room.
Using pneumatic actuators developed by Mercedes' Formula 1 engineers, the EQS’ battery uses a “floating cell carrier,” enabling it to expand when charging and contract when it discharges.
Mercedes hasn’t disclosed how long the road testing phase for the EQS is to last, but its first production car is expected to launch before the end of the decade.
