Kia Recalls Over 80K Electric Vehicles and Hybrids Over Faulty Airbag Deployment
Kia has issued a recall for over 80,000 EVs and hybrids due to an issue that could prevent the airbag from deploying—or, cause it to deploy randomly—according to Inside EVs.
A total of 80,225 Niro crossovers are included in the recall, comprised of 2023-2025 Niro EV, hybrid, and PHEV models assembled between 2022-2024. The bulk of the recall applies to Niro hybrids, accounting for 49,535 units. Additionally, only vehicles with a manual front passenger seat are affected.
The reason for the recall lies with a vulnerable floor wiring assembly underneath the front passenger seat, which is prone to damage. If damaged, the front airbags and seat belts may be prevented from deploying properly. There is also a risk of the side curtain airbag spontaneously deploying.
Additionally, damage to the wiring can prevent the front passenger airbag being deactivated when using a child seat, or block the seatbelt pre-tensioner from being deactivated.
Dealers have been instructed to inspect the floor wiring assembly in recalled vehicles, and replace it if deemed necessary. They will also ensure the harness is correctly routed and add additional protective coverings.
