General Motors Recalls Chevrolet, Cadillac Vehicles for Power Steering Failures
General Motors has issued a recall for several models due to an issue causing power steering to fail, according to Road and Track.
Covered in the recall are 934 vehicles, comprised of 536 Chevrolet Camaros, 200 Chevrolet Corvettes, 104 Cadillac CTS sedans, and 94 units of the Cadillac ATS. NHTSA estimates that 10% of these vehicles are affected by the issue, with model years spanning 2016-2018.
The problem was caused by a manufacturing error at the power steering supplier, leading to electrical connectivity from the circuit board to the steering gear assembly being lost. GM has said the tooling that created the faulty parts has been changed as of June 9, 2017.
NHTSA noted that these vehicles may lose electric power steering while driving, lasting an entire ignition cycle and potentially returning once the vehicle is restarted. Drivers who experience the issue will see an information center message on their dashboard and hear a chime.
GM first discovered the issue after NHTSA requested an investigation into a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro that experienced a steering gear failure earlier this year. An internal report from GM’s Speak Up for Safety program was filed by Feb. 7, 2025, with an investigation beginning Feb. 14. By the end of the investigation, GM fielded 43 complaints and no injuries between 2017 and 2025 related to the problem.
To resolve the issue, GM is having dealers install new power steering gear assembly that lack the faulty circuit board.
