Stellantis Recalls Older Ram Pickup Trucks for Defective Airbag Inflators
Ram has recalled some of its older pickup truck models due to defective airbag inflators that can cause injury, according to Auto Evolution.
A little over 6,000 vehicles in total are affected, comprised of model year 2016-2019 Ram 1500 trucks, and 2016 Ram 3500 Cab Chassis trucks.
The problem is rooted with curtain airbag inflators produced by Joyson Safety Systems, based in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The company is controlled by Ningbo Joyson Electronic Corp and PAG Capital, and was previously known as Key Safety Systems before integrating Takata in April 2018 and taking its current name.
In August 2023, Stellantis began investigating the inflators, and determined the ones they used had been stored in lots exposed to moisture. This can lead to internal corrosion and rupturing that can cause injury, similarly to Takata’s defective airbag inflators. Fortunately, no reports of injury from the Joyson inflators have been received.
Letters to impacted vehicle owners will be mailed between Feb. 13-20, with dealers being made aware as of Jan. 23. Stellantis will have any inflators with potential corrosion replaced with components produced outside the recalled timeframe.
Though the recall is set to launch this quarter, dealer communications have suggested that replacement side curtain airbag inflators are in low supply.
