Tire Resale Scam Targeting New Hampshire Repair Shops, Costing Them Thousands

Scammers allegedly use stolen credit card numbers, with the cost being bounced back to the business.

New Hampshire auto shops are the latest target of a scam involving tire sales, reports WMUR News 9.

When Peter Dauphin of Sanborn Auto in Laconia, New Hampshire, received a call for special tires, he didn’t find anything strange about it. He promptly put in the order, and the shop would have to pay for them when they arrived.

However, when Ginny Sanborn went through payroll the following Monday, she realized they were never paid back. It cost them $6,400 that they’re unlikely to get back.

Sanborn contacted her credit card company, which informed her it was likely a tire resale scam based out of Nashua. Scammers allegedly use stolen credit card numbers, with the cost being bounced back to the business when the card’s owner sees the fraud and disputes a charge.

This is far from the only shop that’s been targeted. Sanborn said that she knows of 12 other shops in the Lakes Region that have been victim of the same scheme. Recently, we covered that a similar scam is being used to target shops in North Carolina as well.

“It really hurts,” Sanborn said. “We can't make up the money that easy.”
