The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has stated that seven states and the District of Columbia had the most plug-in car registrations in 2022 of anywhere else in the United States, according to Green Car Reports.
California, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, Vermont, Colorado, Nevada, and D.C. had the most plug-in car registrations, “based on a combination of census data and registration data, the latter including plug-in hybrids alongside EVs.”
The DOE said the leader was California, with “27.55 registrations per thousand people.” After them came Hawaii, with “15.43 registrations per thousand people.” More than half of the total states listed “had over five plug-in hybrid or EV registrations per thousand people, and none had fewer than one per thousand people.”
California has remained the leader in EV registrations from 2021 and was “followed by Florida, Texas, Washington, and New York.” At the time, Florida, Texas, and Washington lacked zero-emission vehicle mandates, though Washington has recently adopted them, resulting in the entirety of the West Coast committing to a ban on gas cars by 2035.
