The U.S. and Mexico reached an agreement on to suspend the scheduled tariffs ‘indefinitely’.
June 11, 2019—On Friday, President Trump tweeted the official end of the tariff threats against Mexico. In response, Mexico has agreed to take strong measures against illegal immigration at the southern border.
According to theLos Angeles Times, the original plan entailed imposing a 5 percent tariff on all Mexican imports effective June 10, and would have increased 5 percent each month until October unless Mexico took action against “the illegal inflow of aliens coming through its territory.”
The call for tariffs sparked an outcry from business leaders and many in the president’s own party, including Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Other auto industry suppliers were already trying to figure out how to coexist with a president who calls himself the “tariff man” and is willing to use the strategy as a diplomatic whip even if it stings U.S. manufacturers and consumers, according toDallas News.
