April 22, 2016—The ride-hailing app Uber Technologies Inc. was fined $11.4 million in Pennsylvania for operating illegally in the state in 2014, according to a report from Reuters.
Uber operated in the state without commission authorization from February to August 2014 and failed to respond to requests about its operations.
The fine was the largest ever imposed by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. An initial ruling in November imposed a $49.9 million fine, but the fine was reduced.
Uber spokesman Jason Post said the company was surprised by the fine, which is more than 45 times higher than a $250,000 fine Lyft paid in a similar case.
Uber plans to appeal its fine to a Pennsylvania state court.
