California Fines Honda $632K for Selling Customer Data to Ad Tech Companies
Honda is being fined $632,500 by the state of California for violating the state’s Consumer Privacy Act, reports Automotive Dive.
The California Privacy Protection Agency claimed that American Honda Motor Co. had been requiring excessive personal information from California customers, which was collected and sold by Honda to ad tech companies.
As part of a settlement with CPPA, Honda faces administrative fines of up to $2,500 for each data privacy violation, along with a fine of $7,500 for intentionally collecting sensitive data from customers.
Additionally, Honda will have to implement a simplified process for California residents that will help them be able to assert their rights, and alter its contracting process with third parties that ensures personal information is protected.
The automaker will also have to certify its compliance, train employees, and enlist a user experience designer to review methods for customers to submit privacy requests.
