Tesla Recalls Over 376K Vehicles for “Overvoltage Breakdown,” Loss of Steering Power

Vehicles equipped with electronic power-assisted steering are prone to an “overvoltage breakdown,” which can overstress motor drive components.

Tesla has issued a recall for over 376,000 vehicles due to an issue that can cause drivers to lose steering power, reports CBS News.

Covered in the recall are certain 2023 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, with software older than 2023.38.4.

According to a regulatory filing from Tesla, vehicles equipped with electronic power-assisted steering, or EPAS, are prone to an “overvoltage breakdown,” which can overstress motor drive components on the printed circuit board and cause drivers to lose power steering.

When overstress occurs, drivers will see a visual alert on the user interface reading “Steering assist reduced. Steering may require increased effort.” If the overstress happens when traveling over 0 MPH, the alert will appear before loss of EPAS once dropping to 0 MPH.

Letters will be mailed to affected owners on March 25. Tesla has released a free software update to remedy the issue.
