ASE Developing Accreditation Standards for Artificial Intelligence in Auto Repair
The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence is partnering with Convertible AI to develop an accreditation process for working with AI-powered tools in auto repair, according to a press release.
As ASE President and CEO Dave Johnson explained, with automotive tools becoming increasingly advanced, so too is the demand for techs trained to work with these tools growing.
ASE’s partnership with Convertible AI—a professional services company specializing in artificial intelligence—will consist of establishing industry-wide standards for working with AI tools in repair and diagnostics, which will be accomplished through three steps.
Firstly, different AI systems will be evaluated on their accuracy, bias mitigation, and consistency across different makes, models, and years of vehicles in a variety of scenarios.
Then, ASE will ensure that the AI system’s decision-making process is transparent enough for a technician that they can understand how it came to the conclusion, and are able to track and verify AI-generated diagnoses.
Guidelines for ethical use of AI-powered tools in auto repair will then be outlined by ASE, which will take into consideration privacy protection, data governance, and adherence with broader industry standards.
“As we move into a future where AI tools could become as integral to a technician's toolbox as traditional diagnostic equipment, it's crucial that we, along with industry professionals, explore rigorous benchmarks for their use,” said Johnson.
