General Motors is no longer firmly committing to its plans to produce one million electric vehicles by 2025, reports Quartz.
At a CNBC event this past Monday, GM CEO Mary Barra said the company would instead try to match its output to consumer demand.
“We’re seeing a bit of a slowdown right now. We won’t get to a million just because the market is not developing, but it will get there,” said Barra. “We’re going to be guided by the customer.”
This sentiment was affirmed by a GM spokesperson, who told Reuters the company would cease to advertise its EV production plans for 2025, describing their approach moving forward instead as being “flexible.”
The comments follow a recent federal grant awarded to GM, among other automakers, to revamp old facilities for EV production.
This quarter also saw a 34% increase in EV sales for GM from last quarter and a 40% increase from last year, with 21,930 cars sold.
