The ASE Education Foundation has partnered with auto dealer associations to hold automotive competitions for high school and college students across the country, according to a press release.
The most recent competition was held this past December at the Texas Motor Speedway, with the next event taking place Feb. 23 at Weber State University in Layton, Utah, and several more competitions being planned throughout 2024.
As part of the competition, each team of students is paired with a dealer technician in the weeks leading up to the event. The students selected to compete job-shadow a local employer at their service facility, training for the competition alongside the shop’s techs. The competition’s format is flexible, allowing for it to be modified to meet each school and organization’s needs.
In the recent December competition, 40 teams made up of 117 high school seniors from ASE-accredited training programs participated in the North Texas Automobile Dealers Auto Tech Competition, with more than 700 students attending a career fair held, according to ASE Education Foundation President Mike Coley.
“The goal of the student competitions is to connect businesses with schools and increase the interest of students, encouraging them to work and stay within the automotive field,” stated Coley. “These types of events are another way the ASE Education Foundation is working to reduce the industry’s technician shortage.”
