Feb. 20, 2023–U.S. Representatives Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) and Darren Soto (D-FL) have started the bipartisan Vehicle Data Access Caucus to address how data from vehicles are handled, according to a press release from Carter.
The caucus is aimed at serving as a forum for discussion on information that is generated by vehicles “that is useful to a wide variety of stakeholders.” The caucus plans to bring these “stakeholders” together to discuss who can access that information and if any federal actions should be taken to protect it.
Carter said that they wish to promote views from “both the private and public sectors” on “the 'ownership' of the data, who can expand or limit services offered, and who will ensure privacy and cybersecurity.”
“This bipartisan effort will help us address the issue of vehicle data access to protect our constituents from privacy violations,” Soto said. “As members of the Energy and Commerce Committee, we have the opportunity to push for user access to data and necessary protections.”
The caucus has received support from many groups, including but limited to the American Bus Association, NAFA Fleet Management Association, Hertz Corporation, and Safelite Group.
