According to the report, while the trend of keeping vehicles longer has aided to this, IHS Markit found that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to add even more pressure to this phenomenon, possibly pushing the average age up by four to six months.
The average vehicle age of 11.9 years in 2020—12.4 for cars and 11.6 for light trucks—which is a 24 percent increase over the age in 2002, when the average was 9.6.
Further, the report found that vehicles 16 years and older account for 25 percent of vehicles on the road.
