Illinois Mechanic Strike Continues, Some Momentum Towards Potential Deal

Sept. 9, 2021—As the Illinois dealership mechanics strike continues, several dealerships are “actively considering whether they want to remain on strike,” according to a post from IAMAW Mechanics’ Local 701, the union representing the mechanics.

The strike is now entering its sixth week after the initial strike went into effect on Aug. 1. In its most recent post, the union said the Chicago New Car Dealer Committee, the group representing the dealerships, “hasn’t done an adequate job of explaining what is actually on the table.” That has led to numerous dealerships reaching out individually to the union to work out a defector deal and get more information on the actual proposal.

However, there may finally be movement towards a deal, as the union says it could get a response on its proposal as soon as the end of this week.
