Student Automotive Career Survey Findings Unveiled

Sept. 30, 2021

ASE-accredited programs and work-based learning while in school help lead to service success, report shows.

Sept. 30, 2021The ASE Education Foundation has released the findings of its student career survey, first presented in July at the ASE Instructor Training Conference.A total of 81 percent of the respondents, all current students, were ages 15-19, with 2 out of 3 of them having completed high school as their highest level of education.

When asked what types of automotive jobs they were most likely to pursue, automobile service was the field of choice of 64 percent of the total survey respondents. Students from ASE-accredited schools selected automobile service as their top choice at a rate of 64 percent, with 61 percent of students at non-accredited schools making it their top choice. Other types of jobs students were likely to pursue, among others, included medium/heavy truck service (15 percent) and collision/auto body (10 percent).

When asked if they have participated in an internship, apprenticeship, or other work-based learning program, nearly 2 out of 3 of the total students responded in the affirmative. That leaves about 40 percent of the total respondents saying they had not participated in work-based learning.
