US Charging Network Getting Better, Still Needs Work

The U.S. electric vehicle charging infrastructure on the whole is improving, but it still has a long way to go.

Feb. 9, 2022—The U.S. electric vehicle charging infrastructure on the whole is improving, but it still has a long way to go.

Engineering consulting firm Umlaut has found the public charging network has become significantly more robust, according to a report from Reuters per Yahoo! News, though "significant differences in reliability and performance remain between providers."

The firm tested charging networks from six companies across seven U.S. states in September and found that Volkswagen's Electrify America scored the highest overall ranking, with Tesla's Supercharger network and ChargePoint close behind.

The ranking accounted for both a charger's performance, the performance of the charging network's phone app that directs drivers to charging locations and the station's environment. The group used Tesla's Model 3 and Ford's Mustang Mach-E for the tests.

Hakan Ekman, an author of the study said they've seen "the system becoming more mature and stable ... across all categories."
