Biden Invokes Defense Production Act for Domestic EV Battery Production

April 1, 2022

President looks to Cold War-era law as the answer to supply shortages for electric vehicles.

April 1, 2022—To curb the material shortages needed to produce electric vehicle batteries caused largely by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, President Biden announced he’ll invoke the Defense Production Act (DPA), report The Hill.

The DPA allows the president to use executive orders to mobilize private companies to produce goods and supplies when the demand for them is great.

The president’s order could grant companies to receive government funding upwards of $750 million under the DPA’s Title III fund for “feasibility studies on projects that extract materials, including lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite and manganese,” cites The Hill.
