April 24, 2018—Wey, the luxury brand from Chinese SUV-maker Great Wall Motors, recently unveiled a new self-driving, electric vehicle.
While the SUV is still in the concept stage, Wey plans to use this week’s 2018 Beijing auto show to present its vision for self-driving vehicles, according to a report by Motor Authority.
That vision will be exemplified by the Wey-X, an SUV concept with an electric powertrain and Level 5 self-driving capability, meaning the vehicle can safely operate on its own and doesn’t require a human driver. For self-driving, the Wey-X relies on several sensors, combined with artificial intelligence and car-to-car communications.
The Wey-X also comes without a steering wheel. Instead, the cabin serves as an infotainment hub. Facial recognition technology recognizes the occupants and loads their preferred settings, and a digital assistant complete with a hologram interface can interact with occupants via voice-command.
