March 27, 2017—Vermont kicked off its Automated Vehicle Inspection Program on March 20.
Under the old inspection system, state officials saw cases of “sticker shopping”, where people would drive to multiple garages looking for someone who would give his or her vehicle a passing grade, according to a report by Vermont Watchdog.
Now, all inspection diagnostic data will be recorded electronically and kept by the DMV, including images of the vehicle being inspected.
The biggest changes to inspections include a real-time centralized collection of inspection results, the streamlining of the inspection process, and the elimination of unnecessary paperwork by inspection stations, according to the report. Vermont’s Automated Vehicle Inspection Program will provide immediate notification to inspection stations about any safety issues.
